A birthday book

Grand Central Terminal, the famed Manhattan destination that’s part everyday workhorse and part historical treasure, is celebrating its centennial. I was lucky enough to be among those covering its rededication ceremony Feb. 1, a morning program kicked off by New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and filled with assorted dignitaries and celebrities.

The March “Give Me Shelter” issue of WAG has my story that touches on not only that event but also the terminal itself and the many events in coming months that are planned to mark the milestone (“In a ‘Grand’ Tradition,” Page 29). The story also includes a mention of a book that any fan of Grand Central Terminal will want to own. We didn’t have space in the print edition to run some of the book’s photographs, which give a glimpse into its breadth, so here they are.

Don’t you love the way they take you back in time? That’s the beauty of “Grand Central Terminal: 100 Years of a New York Landmark” by the New York Transit Museum and Anthony W. Robins (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), which is much more than a simple keepsake. It’s a thoughtful, well-executed book that’s educational and truly entertaining, filled with stories, secrets and an incredible array of photographs that trace Grand Central through every phase of its history.

Grab a copy and settle in for a read that will take you through a very familiar place that you just may start to look at with fresh eyes.
