Alamo opens August 5

The day I have been counting down to for months has finally arrived.

In July’s WAG Magazine I did a story on the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, which is opening at 2548 Central Park Avenue in Yonkers. At the time, the date was still TBA, but now the date is just A.

The Alamo Drafthouse will have its grand opening on August 5. As an added bonus, from August 2 through August 4, the theater will be offering $2 tickets and 50 percent off food as part of its staff training days.

Wait, $2 tickets and half off food? After serving and cleaning up for me, the Alamo might need another staff training day. You’ve been warned, Alamo staffers.

“After many months, we couldn’t be prouder to be opening up our first New York theater in Yonkers,” says Alamo founder Tim League.  “I’m moving my family up for the opening, and I hope to get to know as many of our new neighbors as possible.”

If League needs a place to stay, he can have my bed. I’ll sleep on the floor. He just has to give me free movies, and we’re good.

The Alamo combines my two favorite hobbies: Eating food and watching movies. If they start showing adult movies, they can add my third favorite hobby to the mix.

Alamo will feature six screens with new releases, indie films and special events, while serving pizza, burgers and 32 beers on tap, with half coming from local breweries like Yonkers Brewery and Captain Lawrence.

In August, they will be hosting events featuring Bill from Bill and Ted (not Keanu Reeves, the other one) and quote-alongs to Shaun of the Dead, Big Lebowski, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The guy who played Mike Teevee in Willy Wonka will also be there for a screening. Where did they find him?

I recently had a chance to take a hard hat tour of the Drafthouse. I got to wear an actual hard hat, already making this the best day ever. But even though it was heavily under construction, the theater looked very cool. They have a 20-seat theater to show indies that I have already fallen in love with. The big theaters look cool too, there’s not a bad seat in the house.

I recently went to a similar theater in Williamsburg (so many food trucks!) that served food during a movie. Experiencing an Alamo imitator made me even more excited for the real thing.
