Bittersweet look at bygone era

WAG’s Bill Heltzel wrote an evocative piece on documentary photographer Marisa Scheinfeld and her then-upcoming book on the resorts of the Catskill Mountains for our June, travel-themed issue. http://www.wagmag.com/new-book-explores-the-greatest-distance-time/

Earlier this month, “The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland” (Cornell University Press) was published – and Scheinfeld will be on hand this weekend for a book signing in Larchmont.

Featuring more than 125 photographs of what remains of the once-thriving hotels and bungalows, along with essays by Scheinfeld, historian Jenna Weissman Joselit and author Stefan Kanfer, the book is a bittersweet journey for Scheinfeld, a Waccabuc resident who was raised in the Catskills.

She will be signing copies from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at Kenise Barnes Fine Arts, 1947 Palmer Ave., which is also offering limited-edition fine-art photographs from the book.
