Breakfast at Famous Greek Kitchen

The Greenwich restaurant, known for its Greek fare, boasts a delicious American-style brunch.

As the proverb says, “A Sunday well spent brings a week of content.”

Well, let’s just say that mine was spent savoring a delicious breakfast – and bottomless coffee – at Famous Greek Kitchen in Greenwich. And even after Monday came and went, I was still feeling suspiciously upbeat.

Coincidence? I think not.

It was a suggestion offered by my best friend, who proposed that we have brunch at “one of her favorite spots.” I’d never been there before, neither have I been too adventurous in the brunch department, so I immediately agreed. After all, when it comes to good food, she’s never steered me wrong.

And she certainly didn’t this time.

Famous Greek Kitchen, a family-run restaurant – whose owners also manage Mamaroneck Diner and Pizza in Mamaroneck – is best known for its traditional Greek fare. But this time, we came for its American breakfast. Upon first (and second, third and fourth) glance of the menu, it was a challenge to select one dish. There was the flavorful explosion of the sweet Vanilla, coconut, blueberry pancakes (yes, a combination of all three flavors) or the Belgium waffles with gelato, the hearty steak and eggs or the healthy Greek wrap, to name a few options. My friend and I opted for a compromise between hearty and healthy, as I selected the eggs benedict with Canadian ham and she chose a classic frittata – with two coffees, of course.

Both dishes were pleasantly proportioned. My dish boasted two perfectly cooked poached eggs, which deliciously complemented the saltiness of the ham and texturally contrasted the crunch of the toasted English muffin. Much to my surprise, both entrées came with breakfast potatoes, which were also quite satisfying. My friend was very pleased with her dish as well.

Aside from our delicious dishes, the rustically chic ambiance proved charmingly inviting. We enjoyed several cups of coffee, engaged in small talk with our attentive waiter, and took our time chatting.

Aside from the American breakfast, Famous Greek Kitchen’s popular lunch and dinner options including souvlaki, befteki, falafel and gyro sandwiches and platters, as well as deep-dish pizza and decadent entrées, from mousaka (casserole layers of grilled eggplant, potatoes, spiced ground lamb and béchamel sauce) and organic salmon wrapped in phyllo to arnesia paidaka (roasted rack of lamb with fresh herbs) and risotto stuffed peppers. And, of course, there are the homemade spreads, which include hummus, melitzansolata (roasted eggplant), roasted bean dip and tzatziki.

We’re already planning to make another trip in the near future.

Famous Greek Kitchen is at 10 N. Water St. in Greenwich.
