Fashionable fundraising to end bullying

Kick off the school year with kindness at Bloomingdales’ “Fashionable Fundraiser.”

Going back to school is an exciting time for most, yet it can be especially daunting for the many girls who fall victim to bullying. While boys often exhibit physical aggression toward one another, girl-against-girl bullying can be especially cruel as it is often more insidious, involving such verbal harassment as spreading rumors, telling secrets and sending nasty texts and posts on social media.

Kind Campaign is a nonprofit that provides girls with a platform to speak out about girl-against-girl bullying. Bloomingdale’s White Plains is participating in a “Fashionable Fundraiser” from Aug. 22 through Aug. 26 to benefit the Kind Campaign with a series of events and the sale of a capsule collection of T-shirts featuring messages such as “Find Your Kind” and “Cool to Be Kind,” as well as 20 percent off purchases.

To kick off the fundraiser on Wednesday, Aug. 22, Bloomingdale’s is hosting a friendship bracelet workshop with Shame on Jane (noon to 4 p.m.), where participants can pick a complimentary bracelet and write a note of kindness to pass on to a friend or loved one. On Saturday, Aug. 25, Sew Happy is bringing in sewing machines to teach kids how to sew a “KIND” basket in 20-minute sessions (2 to 4 p.m.) The “Fashionable Fundraiser” will include a photo booth and an interactive Kind Wall to promote kindness before the school year begins.
