Hats off to horsepower

It’s a day for toppers and Teslas as Greenwich Polo Club presents the finals of the 20-goal Butler Handicap Sunday, July 17 with some high-flying activities.

Before the match, the club will once again join forces with Tesla for an event that brings new meaning to “horsepower.” Polo pro Salvador Ulloa – aboard either Denali or Naomi – will charge 150 feet down the field against a professional driver and one of two Tesla Model X SUVs. They’ll then make a pit stop – with Ulloa switching horses and the driver, cars – and zoom to the finish. (Last year Tesla’s Model S P85D defeated polo player Joaquin Panelo and his horse Picolina in a race.)

Driver demonstrations of the Tesla Model S P90D will also be available for those who RSVP here http://greenwichpoloclub.com/tesla-test-drive/.

London-based designer Katherine Hooker, who’ll have a pop-up shop at the club Sunday, will be sponsoring a hat contest as well. Fans might want to draw inspiration from HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, who has been seen in some of Hooker’s creations.

To enter the contest, come to the club Sunday and post a photo on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, using the hashtags #KatherineHooker and #GreenwichPolo. The fan with the best outfit and hat will be notified after the stomping of the divots at halftime and will receive a $500 gift certificate during the awards ceremony at the end of the match.

Polo matches at the club continue Sundays Aug. 28-Sept. 11 for the East Coast Open, the biggest polo tournament of the summer. Tickets may be purchased online and range from $40 per car for lawn seating to $500-$600 for VIP private cabanas (seating eight).
