Helping hands, creative minds

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the need to give – of your time, money and self – is greater than ever. Don’t neglect the Red Cross and your local hurricane-relief efforts.

That said, we at WAG want to call your attention to two new charitable ventures, because we know that love given is love expanded:

Harvest Table is a festive Nov. 3 fundraiser for New Covenant House of Hospitality, the only soup kitchen serving all of lower Fairfield Count. It will feature demonstrations from restaurateurs and hospitality industry specialists. The event will conclude with a luncheon featuring a keynote presentation by Debra Ponzek, chef, cookbook author and owner of Aux Delices of Greenwich. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., at the Italian Center, 1620 Newfield Ave., Stamford. Tickets are $50 per person. Call Betsy Lopez at (203) 964-8228 or visit ccfairfield.org.

Uniqlo, the rising econo-chic clothing brand, has announced its Clothes for Smiles campaign, a collaboration with the No. 1-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic, the Japanese company’s global brand ambassador. The campaign consists of two programs, funded at $5 million each. One strives to enhance children’s education through an agreement between UNICEF and Fast Retailing. The other is entertaining ideas from anyone who’s interested on how to improve the lives of children worldwide. Entries will be accepted at clothesforsmiles.uniqlo.com through Dec. 31, with the final selection to be made by Djokovic, Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, architect Tadao Ando and Tadashi Yanai, chairman, president and CEO of Fast Retailing.
