In an artistic spirit

WAG readers have already met Barbara Galazzo.

She was the one who dreamed up the ArtFull Living Designer Show House in Cold Spring last summer, a wonderfully creative effort we spotlighted last June’s “Sculpting Summer” issue.

And in her continuing role as the founder of Cold Spring Arts, Galazzo has tipped me off to a few more artistic endeavors coming soon to the Putnam County village.

The Marina Gallery will be featuring new works by Martee Levi in “The Spirit of Color,” which opens June 7.

Her work, which Levi has described as “celebrating life and its many varying possibilities,” is inspired by artists including Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian and Paul Cezanne, among others. She calls herself an “exuberant colorist,” who draws on personal influences ranging from her Native American heritage to her time as a jazz dancer to her love of music.

An opening reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. June 7 at the Marina Gallery, at 153 Main St., with the exhibition continuing throughout June. For more details, call the gallery at (845) 265-2204.

In other arts news, “Fashion as Art: A Matter of Taste” opens that same evening, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Galazzo’s own gallery, Gallery 66 NY at 66 Main St. It kicks off a town-wide slate of activities, “Fashion as Art,” which Galazzo and Marilyn Heberling of the Art to Wear Too boutique have organized. For details on those events, visit gallery66ny.com.

And if that’s not enough art for you, we pass along more news from Marcy B. Freedman, WAG’s favorite performance artist, who tells us Peekskill’s 16th annual Open Studios will be held from noon to 5 p.m. June 1 and 2.

Freedman will be among the more than 80 artists showing their work in some 25 studios, galleries and special exhibition spaces.  Catch a video by Freedman and Gene Panczenko, “Woman’s World: It Was a Perfect Place – Until ‘He’ Arrived,” at the Peekskill Coffee House, while she offers a one-on-one, face-to-face interactive performance called “Modern & Contemporary Art for Dummies” in her studio (#203 in 1006 Brown St.). She’ll also have her collages, photographs and videos on display both days.

Information and maps will be available at the Peekskill Gazebo, at North Division Street and Central Avenue. For more details, visit peekskillartsalliance.org or downtownpeekskill.com.

  1. As a participant in Gallery 66, Barbara continues to inspire the arts to thrive in a slow economy. The artists at Gallery 66 and Marina are incredible and an asset to our small town Main Street. Brava!
