Right now, it’s just a big rock.
But Bob Madden sees much more – and is inviting WAG along as his latest artistic vision comes to life.
The stone artist – who with his wife, fiber and metal artist Karen, are the heart of Rock and a Soft Place studio in Dutchess County’s Poughquag – has undertaken quite an ambitious commission.
He is working with a Manhattan businessman to create a work for his multi-acre Hudson Valley property that he uses as an employee retreat.
Madden already has gone to the property to select a boulder, moved it to its chosen site and will, as he says, “carve it in situ” over the next couple of months.
Madden tells us the stone is quite something: 10 feet long by 5 feet deep, varying from 2 to 5 feet high. He’s calculated it that it weighs nearly 20 tons. Eventually, it will stand on end at around 9 to 10 feet high.
Madden promises to share his progress, which we will pass along. We’re looking forward to see what emerges out of the rock.
