Rockin’ toward the finish

Completion is in sight for stone artist Bob Madden on the sculpture project WAG’s been following.

We’ve been following the progress here of stone sculptor Bob Madden’s latest project.

Madden, who exhibits locally and works through the Rock and A Soft Place Studio in Dutchess County’s Poughquag, has been creating a sculpture for a multi-acre Hudson Valley property that a Manhattan businessman uses as an employee retreat.

In our latest update, Madden shares that the summer’s frequent rain has put him a bit behind schedule.

The big news, though, was that the boulder was lifted into position about a month ago, with finishing details such as smoothing and sanding ongoing.

We visited Madden late last month at his home-based studio to hear more about the work, with WAG photographer Bob Rozycki also heading out to the field to capture Madden at work on a recent day.

Madden remains intent on having the finished work officially unveiled during the ArtEast Open Studio Tour, set for Oct. 13 and 14 and 20 and 21 in Dutchess and Putnam counties.

Check out WAG’s October issue, in print and online, for a full feature on Madden and the project.
