An afternoon of Chippendale tales

Chippendale furniture gets its moment in the spotlight during the next meeting of the Greenwich Decorative Arts Society.

The Greenwich Decorative Arts Society will next present an afternoon devoted to the subject of Chippendale, the man and his designs.

“Chippendale: The Man and the Myth,” a lecture by Brock Jobe, Professor Emeritus of American Decorative Arts, Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, will speak during the event that gets underway at 1:15 p.m. May 6 at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich.

Here’s how the society is advancing the event:

“In Britain and America, no furniture maker is more famous than Thomas Chippendale. His designs reached both sides of the Atlantic through a groundbreaking pattern book, ‘The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director of 1754.’ During his lifetime, he oversaw one of the largest furniture-making firms in London, and eventually his name defined an entire style of 18th-century furniture. The lecture recounts the remarkable story of Chippendale’s career and takes us on an armchair tour of grand country houses in England and Scotland that feature the master craftsman’s greatest creations.  Along the way, we will confront the truth as well as the fiction associated with this most fascinating fellow, Thomas Chippendale.”

Admission for nonmembers of the Greenwich Decorative Arts Society is $25. Space is limited.  Reservations are required for members and guests and may be made by emailing greenwichdecorativearts@gmail.com.
