In the winter of 2012, dance photographer Henry Leutwyler was given unprecedented access to the New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center. The result is “Ballet: Photographs of the New York City Ballet” (Steidl), a beautiful new book quite like no other. It’s not a portrait or a documentary of the company – though it is partly that – so much as a series of impressions as fleeting as dance itself. It’s as if Degas were among us and picked up a camera instead of a palette to capture the grit and the glamour that both lie at the heart of dance. – Georgette Gouveia
