Cool days, hot pretzels

We’re heading into Labor Day this weekend, the harbinger of cooler weather ahead, and it’s making us realize that fall entertaining is about to heat up.

From small evening get-togethers around the fire pit to those classic afternoon football-viewing parties, autumn is ripe with reasons to gather with friends and family.

If you’re tired of serving the same old thing, though, you might want to consider something that came to our attention recently that combines an old-fashioned appeal with contemporary taste. It’s the new line of handcrafted pretzels from Eastern Standard Provisions Co.

WAG recently received a sample from the Boston-based company, and we have to say, it had us rethinking how we sometimes fall back on the classic chips-and-dip platter.

The company, we learned in press materials, is “the latest venture for restaurateur and James Beard Award Semi-Finalist Garrett Harker and an all-star team of four co-founders, who share a sense of purpose honed in their combined 150 years of restaurant, hospitality and food service experience. Under the leadership of Harker and master baker Lauren Moran, who studied under the culinary icon Jacques Pepin, Eastern Standard Provisions Company is committed to delivering uncompromising quality into the realm of the hand-held snack.”

We thoroughly enjoyed our sampling of hand-rolled pretzels. They arrived ready to heat (but can also be frozen) and indeed proved to be light and airy, as billed, following a simple heating up in a conventional oven.

Selections of the pretzels, available in a variety of shapes, start at $14.99. You might want to order extras, as they will go fast.

And stay tuned, as there are plans to introduce dipping sauces, plus flavored salts and sugars.
