Spa tips to beat the winter blues

Hard to believe, but the winter solstice doesn’t occur until Dec. 21. It’s still fall, and yet it feels like winter is one vast cold desert that stretches out from October to April. The THANN Sanctuary Spa at the Castle Hotel & Spa in Tarrytown knows the feeling. The spa, which has become part of the WAG family (http://www.wagmag.com/everybody-exhale/), has some sensible suggestions for beating the winter blues:

  1. Hydrate

Drink plenty of room-temperature water throughout the day.  Room-temperature water helps to warm up your organs especially in the morning after you wake up.  Drink at least eight glasses of water each day. The moisture will also help open mucous membranes, including those in your sinuses.

  1. Use aromatherapy

Increase the presence of aromatherapy in your daily life.  Aromatherapy can boost self esteem, confidence, hope and mental strength, and it uplifts spirits and fights depression.

  1. Exfoliate

It’s important to exfoliate regularly throughout the winter months. Dead skin cells reduce the amount of absorption you normally get from the products you apply, and increase winter dryness and irritation.  It is best to exfoliate the skin on your face once or twice a week to reduce dead skin cells.  Natural ingredients like oatmeal that “digest” your dead skin are effective, safe and work wonderfully. Even five minutes of exfoliation is extremely beneficial.

  1. Walk

Enjoy the great outdoors. This is a perfect opportunity for a healthy and productive breathing exercise. A brisk walk outdoors can provide a change of scenery and terrain, which can help stave off boredom. The more fresh oxygen you take in, the cleaner and healthier your blood circulation will become. Walking outdoors in the winter can help strengthen your bones, improve your mood, motivate you to exercise and burn calories.

  1. Massage

You can reap many of the benefits of age-old healing practices with your own hands and tame tension headaches. Place your thumbs on your cheekbones close to your ears, and use your fingertips to gently apply pressure and rub the temples (the soft spots between the corners of your eyes and your ears). Using firm pressure in a tiny circular motion, gradually move your fingers up along your hairline until they meet in the middle of your forehead, massaging your entire forehead and scalp as you inch along.

  1. Moisturize

It’s important to have a daily moisturizing routine to help maintain your skin — especially in winter. Product is very important. Avoid any oil-based moisturizers. The oil-based offerings are going to clog your pores, which can cause breakouts.

  1. Wash

Although it sounds so simple, wash your hands often.  This is the most effective way to stop the spread of germs, infections and illness. Experts recommend washing hands every few hours.. Give them a wash after touching someone else’s phone or keyboard at work. Then moisturize them to prevent dryness.
