Summertime sips

WAG has featured the wines from Aveleda Portugal in the past, so we weren’t surprised to hear from the company again.

It’s now promoting a selection of its low-alcohol, low-calorie wines as the ideal companions for picnics – or any other summertime entertaining.

The Portuguese winery, a family-owned venture established in 1870, is showcasing its selection of Vinho Verdes, billed as “the perfect match for your summer picnics.”

Its flagship brands, Aveleda and Casal Garcia, offer different Vinho Verde experiences that just might surprise your palate.

Here are a few options, with tasting notes culled from company materials:

Aveleda Vinho Verde – Aveleda’s top-selling wine in the U.S. is a pale wine that shows delicate aromas of fresh citrus with crisp acidity. Pair with fresh starters such as pineapple and shrimp toasts for the ultimate Portuguese picnic experience.

Aveleda Alvarinho – Considered the “most notorious” white grape variety in Portugal, the Alvarinho produced exclusively at Aveleda estate is at the origin of this varietal wine. With a zesty-yet-smooth structure, this wine offers a long and fruity finish, with passion fruit and citrus notes leaving hints of white flowers.

Casal Garcia Vinho Verde – A cheerful white, with notes smooth, fresh and full of fruity aromas. It’s ideal as an appetizer or throughout a meal, especially when paired with Asian cuisine, light fish dishes or salads.

Casal Garcia Sparkling White – A perfect finish to any picnic, with crisp and fine bubbles pairing perfectly with assorted pastries, cheesecake or chocolate pudding.

WAG sampled the sparkling white this past weekend, and it indeed added a crisp, light note to a casual supper. With all the above priced at $10 or less, the wines seem perfectly designed as a quick and easy addition to laid-back summer gatherings.
