Swinging into action at Greenwich Polo

There are few better ways for dads to spend their special day than with the family at Greenwich Polo Club, where it’s now high season. Polo is an elegant but intense game. Last Sunday’s match between Peter Orthwein’s Airstream team and the newbie Shreve, Crump & Low team was a perfect example, with the action quickly heating up, the penalties mounting and a couple of balls going out of bounds, to the delight of the fans, who also enjoyed the picnicking, the various food and retail vendors, the music and Alejandro (Alex) Roldan’s good-natured play-by-play. In a tough contest, Airstream prevailed 10-9, thanks to last-chukker (period) heroics by MVP Guillermo Agüero.

Father’s Day marks the conclusion of the Monty Waterbury Cup, a United States Polo Association national event named for the brilliant James “Monty” Waterbury, one of the “Big Four,” the U.S. team that won five Westchester Cups over Great Britain between 1909 and 1914.

The season runs through Sept. 13, with the gates opening at 1 p.m. for the Sunday matches, which begin at 3 p.m. Admission is $40 per car. For more, visit greenwichpoloclub.com.
