Luxury, beauty… indeed

The famed Viennese craftsmen’s collective is explored in a major exhibition, “Wiener Werkstätte 1903-1932: The Luxury of Beauty,” at the Neue Galerie in Manhattan.

WAG spent time on a recent morning touring the latest exhibition to open at the Neue Galerie, the Museum for German and Austrian Art in Manhattan.

Drawing us down was a press walk-through its latest exhibition, “Wiener Werkstätte 1903-1932: The Luxury of Beauty,” which officially opened Oct. 26.

The decorative-arts show presents a major retrospective of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops), a craftsmen’s collective.

And it’s a dazzler – a tour-de-force featuring some 450 objects on loan from both public and private collections in the United States and Europe.

There is jewelry and furniture, home goods and drawings, paintings and ceramics, fashions and textiles showcasing the collective’s aesthetic and spotlighting its leading lights, including Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and Dagobert Peche, all featured through iconic examples.

Those with a love of artistry, history and stunning design will want to make a plan to visit the exhibition, which continues through Jan. 29.

And be sure to look out for our December issue when we’ll continue our coverage.
