What happened to the ‘Lost Leonardo’?

Spend an evening with the world’s most expensive artwork.

In 2017, a work attributed to Leonardo depicting Jesus as the savior of the world was auction at Christie’s in Manhattan – for a record $450 million. Since then we have learned that the work – ostensibly acquired by Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism for that city’s Louvre – was really purchased on behalf of Saudi Arabian ruler Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Today its whereabouts – MBS’ yacht? Swiss storage? – is unknown.

On Thursday, Feb. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers considers the mystery in “Lost Leonardo: The Saga of da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’,” a lecture by Robert Simon, one of the work’s original discoverers.

A specialist in Old Masters, Simon holds a Ph.D. in art history from Columbia University and is the author of the recent “Leonardo’s ‘Salvator Mundi’ and the Collecting of Leonardo in the Stuart Courts” (Oxford University Press).
