For the third time in this young century, Passover falls on the same day as Good Friday. (The other two times were 2012 and 2015. As a result, tax day, which is usually April 15, moves to Monday, April 18.)
Passover recalls the exodus of the Israelites from bondage in Egypt. Just as the Angel of Death passed over the homes of the Israelites in slaying the first-born of Egypt, so the Israelites passed over from slavery into freedom, from death into life.
On Good Friday, Christians commemorate their passage from death into life in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross – a passage that they believe is fulfilled in his Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
At a difficult moment in our world, Passover and Easter, along with spring, offer the hope of renewal.
