50 Main St., White Plains, welcomes more art

GDC and ArtsW have unveiled a new work that welcomes visitors and employees to 50 Main. “Fragments of Something Bigger,” by Bulgaria’s Georgi Minchev.

Last year, Ginsburg Development Companies and ArtsWestchester unveiled the work of nine artists from the greater Westchester County area as part of GDC’s investment in its art collection for 50 Main St. The unveiling was part of the grand opening of the first phase of GDC’s reinvention of the 50 Main St. office building, which includes a new mezzanine amenity level. A key feature of the new common space is a contemporary art collection curated by ArtsWestchester that features numerous Hudson Valley artists.

Now GDC and ArtsW have unveiled a new work that welcomes visitors and employees to 50 Main. “Fragments of Something Bigger,” by Bulgaria’s Georgi Minchev, is a nearly 18-foot-tall sculpture made of highly polished, highly reflective stainless steel, displayed on a pedestal at the entrance to the building.

“Looking for new means of expression in my work, I decided to use combinations of the basic geometric figure cube,” Minchev said in a statement. This form, together with the sphere, is one of the most communicative and understanding geometric forms for man.”

“Minchev’s signature steel sculpture will welcome visitors to White Plains and feel fresh and new every time people pass by it due to the varied reflection of light off the sculpture’s material,” said Janet T. Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester. “Working with innovative developers like Martin Ginsburg, ArtsWestchester is proud to be enlivening Westchester’s cities and towns with world-class works of public art.”

“This exciting new sculpture is yet another example of how working in partnership with ArtsWestchester we are bringing outstanding public art to downtown White Plains and Westchester County,” added GDC Principal Martin Ginsburg. He noted that GDC has installed two sculptures that stood outside 50 Main St. and 1-11 Martine for decades — “First Case” and “Contact” by the late sculptor Seward Johnson. The two sculptures have been restored by the Seward Johnson Atelier and were returned to Main Street and Martine Avenue on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 26 and 27.

“Minchev’s signature steel sculpture will welcome visitors to White Plains and feel fresh and new every time people pass by it due to the varied reflection of light off the sculpture’s material,” explained Janet T. Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester. She continued, “Working with innovative developers like Martin Ginsburg, ArtsWestchester is proud to be enlivening Westchester’s cities and towns with world-class works of public art.”
