A great time to be horsing around

Anyone want to make a bold prediction for this year’s Triple Crown races? Win, lose or draw, the undefeated Nyquist is a star. (We’d say more – except we don’t want to jinx the bay beauty’s chances in the Preakness Stakes May 21 and the Belmont Stakes June 11.)

The Greenwich Polo Club season begins in June – on the 5th with the start of the Monty Waterbury Cup matches. But you don’t have to wait until next weekend or June for your equestrian fix. The Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows are underway.

The shows, now in their 34th year, feature more than 130 hunter and jumper classes through May 22. In addition to the Grand Prix events, there are competitions for children, juniors, adults and amateurs in more than 50 divisions.

With the Rio Olympics just months away, this is a superb opportunity to come out and see past and possibly future champions like McLain Ward and Beezie Madden – or just soak up the pastoral, familial atmosphere.

Old Salem Farm is at 190 June Road in North Salem. For more, call 914-669-5620 or visit oldsalemfarm.net.—Georgette Gouveia
