Stamford-based Americares is a health-focused relief and development organization that saves lives and improves health for people affected by poverty or disaster. Procter & Gamble is the world’s biggest consumer goods company. So it makes sense that they would find each other in the coronavirus crisis. Recently, P & G donated more than $2.5 million in cash and protective gear to support Americares’ response to the pandemic. The donated face shields and replacement shields were manufactured at P & G’s facility in Cincinnati for Americares’ aid deliveries to hospitals and health centers.

“P&G has been a dedicated Americares partner for over 15 years and we are grateful for their generosity and commitment to giving back – especially during times of crisis,” said Americares President and CEO Christine Squires. “This donation will directly support health workers risking their lives to fight COVID-19.”

In addition to donating cash and product for Americares COVID relief efforts, P&G also served as the lead sponsor of the organization’s “COVID Is No Joke” Comedy Benefit. P&G brands Pepto-Bismol, Old Spice, Always, Downy, Head & Shoulders, Metamucil, Pantene and Prilosec OTC supported the May 1 comedy event. More than 200,000 people have since watched the comedy fest, bringing much needed laughter and levity.

“P&G is committed to supporting communities around the world and we’ve been stepping up during the COVID crisis to help meet critical needs,” said P&G Chief Brand Officer Marc Pritchard. “We’re proud to partner with Americares in their mission to provide our first line health-care workers with supplies, training and support to confront this pandemic.”

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Americares has provided protective gear and infection-control supplies to health facilities in 12 countries. In the United States alone, Americares has delivered more than 60 tons of protective supplies, including gloves, masks, gowns and disinfectants. In addition, Americares is training health workers in infection prevention and control, disaster preparedness and mental health and psychosocial support. Americares is also continuing to care for patients at its primary care clinics in Colombia, Connecticut and El Salvador, including referring patients with suspected COVID-19 infections for testing.

Americares has a long history of responding to infectious disease outbreaks, including cholera, Ebola, dengue and Zika. The organization has professional relief workers ready to respond to disasters at a moment’s notice and stocks emergency medicine and supplies in warehouses in the U.S., Europe and India that can be delivered quickly in times of crisis.

Americares responds to approximately 30 natural disasters and humanitarian crises worldwide each year, establishes long-term recovery projects and brings disaster preparedness programs to vulnerable communities. Since its founding more than 40 years ago, Americares has provided more than $18 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the United States.
