Spiro in the spotlight

Beacon-based photographer Meghan Spiro’s work will be featured in “Bella Monnezza,” a show opening May 11 at Hudson Beach Glass.

WAG first heard about Meghan Spiro’s work through Cold Spring artist Russ Ritell, profiled in our January issue

In fact, the Hudson Valley painter shared a portrait of him taken by Spiro that we then featured in our newsletter item on Ritell’s January exhibition at bau Gallery in Beacon.

Now, we turn the spotlight fully on Spiro, a Beacon-based artist, poet, photographer, art director and designer, as an exhibition of her inventive, artistic photography opens this weekend in Beacon.

“Bella Monnezza, beautiful garbage,” Artwork by Meghan Spiro, opens May 11 and continues through June 2 in the second-floor gallery at Hudson Beach Glass, 162 Main St. in Beacon. A reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m.

Here’s how the show has been advanced in press materials:

“You look at decay and it is beautiful…it is garbage as art!” – Ram Dass

“Our history is in our food; it embeds in our DNA. Our food comes from this planet, Gaia, The Pachamama, Mother Earth. She nourishes us with her blooms and fruits and in turn we incubate her with our decay. Compost is our offering; letting our spoils be the fuel for the next harvest season.

Inspired by the beauty found in composting daily, Meghan has collected various food items, plant clippings, dried flowers, and wasted spices over the last year and used them as subjects for this series. Employing her food styling skills, Spiro crafted the compost, playing with its intuitive forms to create stunning compositions that are as lovely as the hearty forms they arrived from. Meghan’s photographs evoke a mood reminiscent Dutch master still life paintings and are equally as vivid and luminant.”
