I’m crazy about loafers – for men and women, so much so that years ago I wrote a humorous dating book called “I Love Men in Tasseled Loafers,” which paid homage to all the shoes – and men – that I dated. (Yup, those Sperry Topsiders did leave a yacht to be desired…)
I started wearing loafers during high school – Bass Weejuns. But I’ve just discovered a new favorite that is bound to become my go-to footwear – Italeau. These stunning shoes are handmade in a family-owned factory in Milan, crafted by artisans who have been making shoes there for centuries. In a word, bellissimo.
One of the best advantages of this fine footwear is that the luxury leather is waterproof – perfect for those April showers. Philippe Colmant, founder of Italeau, told me, “We can’t give away all of our secrets. But I can tell you that we spent a lot of time sourcing the best waterproof and stain-resistant leathers and suedes available.”
Even the name evokes H2O. The “eau” in “Italeau” refers to the French word for water. Each pair is sized in whole and half sizes – 36 through 41.
The $227 Trino – now in six new colors — is the best-selling loafer and, with its sleek long tassels, adds a great touch of gorgeousness to your gams. – Debbi K. Kickham
