Fear itself

It was President Franklin D. Roosevelt who said in his first inaugural address at the height of the Great Depression:  “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

Fear, he knew, can paralyze you or it can free you to effective action. Feeding Westchester is taking that action. Working with the New York National Guard, the nonprofit has packed 5,000 bags of shelf-stable food at its 40,000-square-foot operations center in Elmsford for New Rochelle students on free or reduced breakfast and lunch. The county’s leading hunger-relief organization also provided 4,000 breakfast bags to help fill the meal gap.

The organization can’t do this alone. It needs donations and volunteers. You can make a difference right now at feedingwestchester.org.

Meanwhile, restaurants are also doing their part. Feeding Westchester partner chef Alan “AJ” Cohen from AJ’s Burgers in New Rochelle sent free lunch for the entire packing team one day to keep everybody going.

Don’t feel like going out but want a special meal? The Roger Sherman Inn in New Canaan is delivering. 203-966-4541, rogershermaninn.com. And Waccabuc’s Jean-Georges Vongerichten, whose restaurants include The Inn at Pound Ridge by Jean-Georges, is delivering from most of his locations. jean-georges.com.
