Spring into museum action

Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum reopens for the season.

With the return of spring and the easing of Covid restrictions comes a relative lightening of the heart as organizations return to in-person events and museums reopen for the season. The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum in Norwalk – a classic example of Second Empire style, which flourished in the United States in the decades bracketing the Civil War – reopens for the 2022 season at noon Wednesday, April 6, with a calendar of events that includes lectures, book signings, art exhibits and community programs to inspire, educate and entertain people of all ages. In the months of April and May, all Connecticut children under age 18 will be able to visit the museum without paying admission. This program is made possible with support from CT Humanities, with funding provided by Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) from the Connecticut state legislature.

Said Executive Director Susan Gilgore and board Chairman Douglas Hempstead: “We are offering two months of free admissions to all children in Connecticut to encourage families from all walks of life to visit this national historic landmark in what we hope will be an inspiring and educational journey that will strengthen the fabric of our communities and support a more inclusive and diverse audience.”

LMMM’s new show, “Fragments of Light, Impressions of Color,” will open at noon Thursday, April 7, and run through Aug. 28.  There’s a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, for the exhibit, which features emerging and established artists working in the style of Contemporary Impressionism and focusing on the effects of light and color, whether through portraiture, landscapes or cityscapes.

The 2022 Season is made possible in part by CT Humanities with  funding provided by Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) from the Connecticut state legislature and by LMMM’s founding patrons, including the estate of Cynthia Clark Brown; leadership patrons, including The Sealark Foundation; and 2022 season distinguished benefactors — the city of Norwalk, The Maurice Goodman Foundation and Lockwood-Mathews Foundation Inc.

Admission to the exhibit will be included with the purchase of a guided tour ticket (when applicable) and is available at lockwoodmathewsmansion.com. For more, email info@lockwoodmathewsmansion.com, or call 203-838-9799.
